ICAOM Takes Acu-Detox Services to the Waianae Community

In early January 2008, the Institute of Clinical Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ICAOM) began providing acupuncture detoxification (Acu-Detox) services to the Waianae community at Waianae District Park.  Since that time, on every Tuesday and Friday of the week, our clinic supervisor and a group of interns have routinely traveled out to Waianae and provided services to over 100 patients with 300 treatments.  The popularity of this program grew within the community, and resulted in a wider group of people requesting Acu-Detox treatments at the Waianae District Community Center.  As an added benefit for both patients and interns, some of the Waianae patients are coming to our teaching clinic for regular treatments.

A few of the patients have made comments to this effect, "I have had a great, empowering experience with the treatments and would recommend it to anyone."  We hope to continue providing these valuable Acu-Detox treatments to the community and plan to work in conjunction with other non-profit organizations, including the Forward Foundation and Ke Ola `Ana, as well as with the City and County of Honolulu, on continuing these outreach community programs.  The Clinic would like to thank the following individuals and organization for making the Acu-Detox program such a success:

Bill Akiona of Ke Ola `Ana for writing the grant
Theresa Alvillar for coordinating the treatments
Randy Otaka, our clinic supervisor
All the ICAOM interns for their support in making the Acu-Detox project a success

Our future plans may include expanding the Acu-Detox programs to communities throughout the state.
